Regeneron Pharmaceuticals has received a big thumbs-up from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its new blood cancer drug called Lynozyfic.
This medicine is made to help people suffering from a serious type of blood cancer called multiple myeloma, especially those who have already gone through at least four other treatments.
What Is Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that starts in plasma cells, a kind of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. These cells help fight infections. But in people with multiple myeloma, the plasma cells grow out of control and crowd out healthy cells.
Every year, over 36,000 people in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with this disease. Out of these, about 4,000 are people who have already tried at least four different treatments but still didn’t get better. This is where Lynozyfic steps in as a new hope.
What Makes Lynozyfic Special?
Lynozyfic is a monoclonal antibody, which means it’s a lab-made protein that works like the body’s natural immune system to fight cancer cells. It is a bispecific antibody, which means it targets two things at once:
One target is BCMA, a protein found on myeloma (cancer) cells.
The other target is CD3, found on immune T-cells, which helps the immune system fight the cancer.
This dual-target method helps the body attack and destroy cancer cells more effectively.
How Well Does Lynozyfic Work?
The FDA gave Lynozyfic an accelerated approval based on a mid-stage trial. The results were promising:
70% of patients saw their cancer shrink or disappear.
45% of patients had their cancer completely disappear.
These are strong results, especially for people who had already tried many treatments without success.
Cost and Availability
Regeneron said it’s working hard to make the drug available to patients soon. The price is high, with a 5 mg vial costing around $470 and a 200 mg vial priced at $18,800. This cost reflects the advanced science and treatment behind the drug.
Are There Any Risks?
Yes, like most strong cancer drugs, Lynozyfic comes with warnings. It has a boxed warning for serious side effects like:
Neurologic toxicity – this can affect the brain and nervous system.
Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) – a condition where the immune system overreacts.
Other similar treatments like Tecvayli from Johnson & Johnson and Elrexfio from Pfizer also have these warnings.
What’s Next for Regeneron?
Regeneron hopes that Lynozyfic and similar drugs can be used earlier in the treatment process, not just after other treatments fail. This could help change the way doctors treat multiple myeloma in the future.
